In December 1985, I recited the Hippocratic Oath before my family, mentors and colleagues. And to this day, I continue to hold dear its dictum to those of us in medicine. It applies without exception to all that I do, whether treating patients or in consultation.
While knowledge and experience are critical in medicine, without integrity, they are empty of life and empathy. Without integrity, what physicians attempt, no matter the arena, will be misguided at best and dangerous at worst. Not only are my patients' lives in my hands, but therein also lies truth and integrity. In treating patients, my greatest responsibility is to do the very best on their behalf by being honest and by applying the highest standards of compassionate health care that I can. In consulting, whether plaintiff or defense, my greatest responsibility is to do my very best without regard to retention by being honest and by applying the highest standards of education as an expert witness that I can. It is my belief that as I educate the triers of fact without prejudice, they can then render a just verdict based upon the facts of the case. In treating or in consulting, my integrity will never be shaded or compromised. "The strongest thing that any human being has going is their own integrity and their own heart."
